USOVO WINE AND BRANDY CELLARS represent an ideal combination of modern production and ancient traditions. The company's philosophy is based on creating and preserving real masterpieces of cognac art as well as reviving drinks that have lost their former glory.
A storied history stands behind the success of the USOVO WINE AND BRANDY CELLARS. The company is located in the territory of the old Usovo Estate connected with the Ilyinskoye Highway, once called the Road of Monarchs. This route was once used by the pilgrims walking to the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery to worship the miraculous relics of Saint Sava Storozhevsky of Zvenigorod as well as Russian tsars Ivan the Terrible, Mikhail Fedorovich and Alexei Mikhailovich Romanovs followed by Peter I and Catherine II.
In the 19th century, monarchs from the Romanov dynasty travelled along this road to their Ilyinskoye Estate. In the modern history of Russia, the road has not lost its high status and has been transformed into a government thoroughfare.
The foundation of USOVO WINE AND BRANDY CELLARS began in 1967 with the launching of the Ilinskoe-Usovo state-owned farm. The endless fields of big ripe strawberries, juicy cherries and plums, raspberry and currant bushes bent under the weight of berries, and numerous ruddy apples — it was decided to process the rich crops into fruit wines. The first company was quite small. The fruit were processed in a single workshop. The fruit crops were usually used to produce port and vermouth wines and apple cider vinegar. The company also produced fruit and berry jams and marmalade. The first produced strong beverages included only vodka of GOLDEN RYE brand. Now, the company's range of products includes dozens of different beverages. Besides numerous brands of cognac, the factory produces brandy, interesting tinctures and even vodka.
Origin of the USOVO Name
For the sake of preserving natural landscapes, as well as for safety reasons, it was always forbidden to erect multi-storey buildings within this area. All new constructions should not be higher than trees. The territory was developed broad and deep, and the buildings grew only downhill. The luxurious Usovo estate surrounded by a beautiful garden with greenhouses appeared here in the second half of the 18th century, while the production of cognacs started only a century later. It then belonged to Empress Maria Alexandrovna Romanova, who repaired the estate, set up a French garden and ordered to dig cellars. The royal lady was vividly interested in winemaking. She accepted cognacs as gifts from foreign ambassadors and she often brought samples of cognac spirits from abroad. All those beverages were stored and aged in private cellars and then served to distinguished guests. Therefore, this place became very popular over time. Balls and courts with wine tastings were held here. After the revolution, the wine and brandy cellars were abandoned. They were not used for their intended purpose for many years.
In 2017, the Main Directorate of Cultural Heritage in the Moscow Region of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation included USOVO WINE AND BRANDY CELLARS into the transregional tourism project called The Imperial Route as one of the places associated with the life of the Tsar Romanov Dynasty. The imperial Ilinskoe-Usovo estate is already being compared with the New Jerusalem. After a long lasting restoration, the estate has become a large tourism and pilgrimage centre. The company plans to organise its own museum and conduct excursions with wine tastings for the fans of enotourism.
Wide Range of Products
To date, the company produces about 90 types of products using unique original recipes. Some of them were awarded at domestic and international exhibitions. Each month, the factory supplies consumers with about four million bottles. The company is one of the top five cognac producers in Russia and the leader in four segments of the alcoholic beverage market. It produces alcoholic beverages of over 20% VOL, vodka, cognac, and brandy. The raw materials for future cognacs are purchased in Azerbaijan, Armenia, the Republic of Daghestan, as well as in France and Spain. Prior to the production, all alcohols go through several stages of strict selection. Experts test them for taste and send to a thorough laboratory testing.
For ageing process, the barrels made of Caucasian oak and produced by the Fanagoria Company from Kuban are used. Since the aroma of fresh wood can change the cognac composition and the pigment can affect the colour of the beverage, they undergo a special treatment with cold and hot water, and further with steam. Only afterwards, the barrels are filled with the first alcohols. Experts closely monitor the way cognac is ageing in the oak barrels. Ageing in inappropriate conditions can cross out all efforts and lead to spoilage of the beverage. The in-house accredited laboratory provides for continuous quality control of beverages.
